- When the 1881 Canadian census was taken, this family was living in Ste-Julienne (Montcalm) Quebec. Hildege’s name in the census is spelled Ildege and his occupation is “Charpentier”. According to family tradition, Hildrege at one time was involved in the fur trading business in Manitoba and the Mid-Western States before moving to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. When the 1900 census was taken, Dave Shootier (indexed this way at ancestry.com), this family was living in Spalding (Menominee), Michgan. Dave said they immigrated in 1883. Julia says she is the mother of nine children with 8 of them living. Dave’s occupation is “day laborer”. When the 1910 census was taken, Dave, Julie and David Sam Shorkey are still living in Spalding. Dave is a “laborer.” In this census Julia says she is the mother of 10 children with 8 of them living. One of the descendants of this family said that Dave at one time operated a bar somewhere near Gladstone/Escanaba, Mich. When the 1930 census was taken, Julienne (Julian) was living in the home of her daughter, Julia and Henry Olson in Escanaba (Delta), Michigan.
