Joseph CHARTIER |
- The exact date when Joseph and Josette moved to the U.S. is not known. They first show up in the 1860 U.S. census in Wood County, Wisconsin living with their daughter Josephine (Chartier) Granshaw. There is some indication that they may have first moved to Port Edwards which is also in Wood County. In the 1900 census for Merrill (Lincoln), Wisc. their son, Joseph Chartier, says he immigrated in 1852. In 1843 the family lived in St-Esprit, in 1844 at the concession of Rawdon and in 1849 at St-Calixte
AN EXCEPTION TO THE RULE
Readers may have noticed that the descendants from V-Joseph Chartier kept the original family name (Chartier), while most of the others in Section C became known as ROBERT. Why? Probably because V-Joseph left Quebec before the surname “Robert” was strongly set. However, during the years this family lived in Wood County, Wisconsin they were for the most part called Sharkey, which is a phonetic spelling of the way the family pronounced Chartier. The Chartiers/Sharkeys who migrated to Western Canada kept the Sharkey name whereas the ones who migrated to other states took back the Chartier name. Some descendants of these Western Canada Sharkeys said the “Sharkey” name was retained to hide their French identity as French Canadians were discriminated against in some of the western Provinces.
